The Seif Abad mine is located between Ardabil and Namin, 25 km northeast of Ardabil, near the village of Seif Abad. The study area is located in the Alborz-Azerbaijan zone on the Cenozoic volcanic belt. The rock is composed of thick to massive, milky white to light cream crystallized limestone of Paleocene age and is underlain by Quaternary sediments and alluvium. The δ13C values range from +1.07 to −0.76‰ with an average of +0.09‰ and the δ18O values range from −3.65 to −4.98‰ with an average of −4.2‰. Being the values of Mn/Sr < 10, the weak correlation between carbon and oxygen isotopes, and the values of oxygen isotope < −5‰ indicate the reliability of the isotopic values in the samples. The isotopic values are consistent with the distribution pattern of carbon and oxygen isotopes in marine carbonate rocks. Also, the calculated Z values for all samples from Seif Abad were > 120, indicating a marine origin. Using isotopic relationships, the average salinity of the formation environment was 30.55‰ and the average formation temperature was 33°C for the samples from the Seif Abad area. The lower salinity and lower δ18O values in the study area could indicate a closed marine environment without connection to the ocean that was fed by a large volume of continental freshwater.
