Abstract :
Abstract The Gurpi Formation in the Persian Gulf Basin presents significant east-to-west geochemical variations due to various tectonic and sedimentary processes. This study has investigated the potential areas for hydrocarbon production of the Gurpi Formation as a possible source rock in the Persian Gulf basin using rock- Eval pyrolysis and vitrinite reflectance. Total organic carbon distribution of the mentioned formation in the Persian Gulf area reveals that this amount has been influenced by basement tectonic processes such as the Qatar-Fars Paleo-high uplift. TOC content increases along the Farzad-C and Forozan fields towards the northwest and eastwards to Oman as well. The distribution of the mean vitrinite reflectance of the Gurpi Formation in the Persian Gulf area represents the lowest maturity over the Qatar-Fars Paleo-high. Moving from this Paleo-high towards the northwest and east of the Persian Gulf, the maturity increases, reaching its highest value in the northwest. This indicates that the Gurpi Formation is at the onset of oil generation window. The results of this study indicate that the mentioned formation is primarily located at the beginning of the oil window and has not played a significant role in the hydrocarbon production of the reservoirs in the Persian Gulf in anticline locations. The role of this formation in the deeper syncline areas and its minimal contribution to hydrocarbon production, especially in the northwest of the Persian Gulf, requires further study.
